Safety tips for sellers, givers and resellers
Most people who sell, give away or buy used books are friendly and honest. A few sensible habits make every meeting safer for everyone.
For sellers and givers
- If you can, meet in a public place, such as the front of a library or a busy parking lot.
- If the pickup is at your home, have another adult there with you.
- Tell a friend or family member who is coming and when.
- Keep the items near the door so the buyer does not need to come further into your home.
- Share only the personal details you need to. A name, a phone number and an address for the pickup are enough.
For resellers
- Confirm the address, the time and what is being offered before you travel.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Do not go inside a home alone if anything feels wrong. It is fine to say no and leave.
- Be clear about the price before you arrive, so there are no surprises at the door.
Payment and scams
- Agree on the price before the pickup.
- Be wary of anyone who wants to pay by check, send more than the agreed amount, or ask for a refund or a deposit.
- BookSourcer never asks anyone for bank account or credit card details, and never collects payment on anyone's behalf.
- If a message claiming to be from BookSourcer asks you for money or financial details, do not reply. Tell us at admin@booksourcer.com.
What BookSourcer does and does not do
BookSourcer passes a seller's request to a local reseller. That is all we do. Each sale or donation is an agreement between the seller and the reseller.
- We do not buy, sell, inspect or collect any items.
- We do not check the identity, background or business practices of sellers, givers or resellers.
- We do not guarantee any price, any payment, or the condition of any item.
- We are not a party to any transaction and we do not control what people do when they meet.
You are responsible for deciding whether to meet someone and for your own safety. Use your own judgment, and follow the tips above. BookSourcer is not responsible for any loss, injury or dispute that arises from a transaction or meeting between users, to the fullest extent the law allows.
If something goes wrong
If you are in danger, call 911. If you have a problem with another user, or want to report something suspicious, email admin@booksourcer.com and tell us what happened. We may stop sending requests to a reseller who behaves badly.
